Moses Ssebandeke is a film-maker/satirist/rapper. Moses started film-making in 2007. Many of his self-written/directed comedy sketches have gone viral and have accumulated 100 million views across all social media platforms. In 2020 Moses graduated with a postgraduate diploma in Writing and Producing Comedy from the BAFTA-winning National Film and Television School (voted one of the best film schools in the world by Variety and Hollywood Reporter) – a course that is sponsored by Channel 4 and Netflix. In 2023 he was selected to take part in the ITV comedy writers’ initiative, where he had the opportunity to write on a new ITV comedy show airing in 2024.
His film Patient 4318 was screened on UK national television as well as in Hollywood, LA, in 2015 at the African American Film Market. In 2012 Moses started to perform stand-up comedy and in 2013 he was selected to take part in a prestigious apprenticeship with BBC Comedy which resulted in Moses working in content creation and development in various departments of the BBC (BBC 1xtra, CBBC and BBC Three). In 2017 Moses Ssebandeke’s script Mary’s Room was shortlisted by Creative England (now called Creative UK) to be a part of the Shortflix programme; this same script was also developed by BFI’s Film London. Mary’s Room went on to be nominated for a Screen Nation award. Moses has written and directed many award-winning short films that have been screened on the BBC. He also wrote and directed a BBC Africa/art interactive drama starring Brit award-winner Stormzy. He has also had two short plays staged at the Laurence Oliver, winning Theatre503 in south London.
In 2018 Moses won the Screen Skills Short Film Award for his short film, Reflection. This film was screened at the BFI. His other short film, Distance, was screened in Budapest and won the Channel 4 Values award. Moses’ graduation film, Insta Grim, won best African Diaspora film at the 23rd African Film Awards and a silver award at the Dark Comedy Film Festival in LA. He is the co-founder of the film collective Lionstooth; with the help of his cohorts they produce both innovative shorts and content. They have had several sold-out screenings at both BAFTA and the Channel 4 headquarters. In 2020 Moses wrote and directed a Lockdown feature film called Drapetomania that is out now. He wrote/directed another feature film in 2021 called Double Booked which is also out now.
