Ian Winterton worked as a film journalist, interviewing many big Hollywood names, before starting to write for theatre in 2009. His play, Sherica, was selected for the 2011 24:7 Manchester Theatre Festival where it won both Best Play and the Audience Choice Award. It was also selected for the Library Theatre’s Re:Play festival and won a prestigious Manchester Theatre Award.
For the screen, Ian has written several short films, the most recent of which – Stuart and Dumplings – was made via Zoom during the Covid-19 lockdown in aid of the Down’s Syndrome Association. In addition, he was commissioned by Saffron Cherry Productions Ltd to write bible and pilot script for Blurred, a police/crime drama.
In audio drama Ian adapted Ramsey Campbell’s novel, The Hungry Moon. Due out from Room 5064 Productions in late 2023, it stars Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Louise Jameson, Mina Anwar and Jemma Moore.
Ian’s other audio work includes two plays – Cracking The Feathers and All The Bens – for Bamalam Productions Ltd, a company he now serves on as a trustee and producer. For Bamalam Ian is co-producer and lead writer on Scuttled, an audio drama in association with MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology) telling the tale of a family working the Rochdale Canal 1840–1922.
As well as screen and audio work, Ian also writes comicbooks for Manchester-based imprint Cutaway Comics. Titles thus far include: Sutekh: The Heretic, Drax: London Calling and Gods And Monsters.
Based in Cheshire, Ian also works occasionally as a visiting lecturer at the University of Chester and the University of Salford, delivering modules on Scriptwriting and Film Studies.
