Val Troy is a comedy writer from Dublin. An accountant in her former life, her pivot to writing comedy is all part of her one-woman strategy to convince people that accountants can have a sense of humour.
She writes humorous commercial fiction and is influenced by Marian Keyes, Emily Henry, and Caroline Grace-Cassidy, amongst others. Her debut novel, The Mix-Up, features perennially single accountant Tara, who is on the lookout for love in her drama-filled world.
With her comedy writing partner, Orla Doherty, she has co-written comedy/drama screenplays and collaborated on a number of comedy projects. Together, Val and Orla are the Irish producers for Funny Women, the leading female and non-binary comedy community. They have produced and co-hosted several sold-out all-female standup comedy and music shows in the iconic Whelans, Wexford St Dublin and they have plans for more.
Val has appeared at several book festivals including Dalkey Book Festival, Listowel Writers Week and Dingle Lit Festival with Orla Doherty and author & broadcaster Barbara Scully. The trio have plans in 2025 for their new show, ‘The Madonna Effect: Reinvention Stories’, a lively mixture of personal reinvention stories and comical insights into life as an older woman.
Val has had comedy short stories and articles shortlisted and published, and she is a contributor to the Funny Womenonline magazine. Val has also taken part in open mic short story showcase events, such as Shorter Stories and Dublin Story Slam.
She has appeared on Virgin Media TV’s Ireland AM and been featured in the Sunday Independent. She also contributes regularly to Dublin community radio and has been a guest on several podcasts.
Val lives in Dublin with her husband and three teenagers. She is an avid gym-goer, is belatedly learning to play the piano and finds an occasional gin & tonic very agreeable indeed.
